a type-fingerprint specimen

browser-only proof of concept · 2026

Who are you,
in type? surveillance by typography.

Every program you install drops fonts onto your system. Microsoft Office leaves Calibri. Adobe Creative Cloud leaves Myriad Pro and a long tail of pro faces. JetBrains IDEs leave JetBrains Mono. Mathematica leaves its own glyphs. From CSS alone, a page can probe which of these resolved on your machine, and assemble an oddly specific profile of who you are.

method
probe
Declares an @font-face with src: local("FontName"). Renders "FontName" against a fallback baseline on a canvas.
mechanism
The browser's font engine resolves the local face, or fails. JavaScript measures the pixel width of the rendered text.
comparison
The CSS rule is the comparison. The width difference is the comparison.
